Do you ever find yourself saying, “I don’t have enough time!” or wondering, “How am I possibly going to get everything done?”
I’ve certainly been there many, many times myself. Like you, I’m a human with work, family, and countless demands on my time.
Understanding Time as Your Most Valuable Resource
Realize that time is literally your most valuable resource. It’s more limited than anything else because everything—money, relationships, hobbies, work—all exists within the boundaries of time. It’s bound, and time is the overarching limit.
How I’m Learning to Use Time Differently
I’ve been playing a lot with decision-making and time lately, and thinking about how we can get bogged down and easily slip into a state of overwhelm rather than a state of action toward a goal.
Here’s a small way I’ve been playing with time: I have jobs, like putting the laundry away, that aren’t my favorite. So, I set my Time Timer (a visual timer) for 10 minutes and commit to tackling it for just that long. It’s a mini-sprint, but it helps me stay aware of time and see exactly how I’m spending it.
The time I spent on laundry—mulling it over and dreading it—was time lost forever. It was gone before I even started. Surprisingly, I find I’m incredibly effective when I’m fully focused on getting ONE THING done.
What’s been fascinating is how much this has freed up my time from avoiding something. I have more freedom and focus for other things now that I’m fully dedicating myself to one thing at a time and paying attention to where my time is going.
Try This Simple Time-Saving Strategy
This week, I invite you to set a timer and see how long it actually takes to do that dreaded task you’ve been avoiding—like me putting away the laundry. Notice what it frees up for you when you’re fully focused and just get it done.
