Facing Decision Drudgery: Overcome Decision Fatigue with Inspired Questions

How do you know youโ€™re solving the right problem? In my coaching, teaching, and personal decision-making, we often encounter decision fatigue or what I call ‘decision drudgery.’ This often occurs when we pose a decision questionโ€”a decision frameโ€”that defines the problem we’re solving in an uninspiring way. For example, “What kind of car should I buy?” or “Should I rent an apartment or buy a house?” These decisions, whether big or small, can frequently feel tedious, uninspiring, or draining.

Reframing the Decision: Inspiring Questions Can Transform a Decision.

The question you’re asking might not be the right one for you. For instance, if deciding what car to buy isn’t inspiring, consider reframing the question to: “What car would allow me to live my inspired life with minimal impact on the planet, yet still let me and my spouse enjoy adventures to the mountains or the beach?”

Similarly, when looking for a home, shift your perspective from mere house hunting to finding a place “where your soul can sing.” This approach transforms the process into one that is inspiring and about the person you want to be and the life you want to lead.

Today’s Upgrade is Simple:ย

  • Notice when youโ€™re problem-solving, no matter if the issue is big or small.ย
  • If you feel uninspired or discouraged, ask a different decision question.ย

Find the question that your heart longs to answer, the one that inspires you, opens possibilities, and fits the narrative of your life. Then, solve that problem.
