Rainbow Over the Valley

Think about communication?

I’ve got a quick story to share that got me thinking about communication and decision-making.

I went outside to film Thoughtful Thursday. In less than a minute, the sound of rain cascading through the trees caught me by surprise, almost like thunder echoing through the woods. I was suddenly caught in a total downpour.

Now, here’s the kicker – I could have seen it coming. The gray skies, the gusty wind, all the telltale signs were there. But, truth be told, I wasn’t paying attention. This little adventure turned out to be the perfect metaphor for today’s Thoughtful Thursday topic: communication.

Whether we’re talking with our kids, our partners, or anyone who matters to us, it’s fascinating how our minds often race ahead when we’re listening. We jump to conclusions and formulate responses, all before the speaker has even finished. It’s like me walking outside, oblivious to the impending rain, missing out on the cues that could have prepared me.

Now, let’s connect this to decision-making. To truly support decision-makers,

we get to watch for ‘weather’ cues by

  • Slowing down and being present in our conversations. What are they actually saying?
  • Asking open-ended questions to help them delve deeper into what’s going on in their mind and heart – their thoughts and feelings.

On this Thoughtful Thursday take a moment to be a mindful listener. Let’s strive to understand one another better and empower each other in our decision-making journeys.

Send me an email at amy@clarity4action.org and share your thoughts with me – Where do you struggle with decision making and feel like you fail to prepare for the weather? Where could you use support?

Warm regards,
